They called themselves the Five. The five men who had somehow survived the horrors of war in their homeland and made it to this small camp on the coast. When they first arrived, they were skinny, malnourished boys with haunted eyes. Now, after a few months of good food and rest, they were still skinny but strong.

The leader of the camp was an older man named Samuel. He had fought in his youth for independence and now struggled to keep that independence from those who would take it by force. It was a fight he knew he wouldn't win but couldn't help fighting anyway.

The Five had been his greatest test as a leader. They had come at the worst possible time. His wife's death had left him broken and questioning everything he thought he knew about life and death.

His days were spent trying to keep his camp safe from raiders, his nights were spent in fitful sleep haunted by dreams of dead loved ones clawing their way out of shallow graves.

Samuel found solace in routine; working with his hands helped quiet his mind and kept him focused on what needed to be done instead of dwelling on what could never be undone.

And so it came to pass that Samuel took over cooking duties for the group before they set off on a new journey, one that would change everything.

It started as a joke between Samuel and Tunde, the youngest of The Five. As Samuel worked over pots bubbling with stew or rice or whatever he could scrounge up, Tunde would sit across from him sharpening knives or cleaning guns.

"Why don't you try making wine next?" Tunde said one day when Samuel was particularly stressed out.

"Wine? You think I can make wine out here?"

"Sure," Tunde said with a shrug, "if you can make all this other stuff we've been eating I'm sure you can figure out how to make wine."

Samuel laughed at the idea but his wheels started turning. He didn't have much in the way of ingredients but he knew he could ferment fruit.

He started by collecting any fruit he could find and after a few weeks, he had enough to try his first batch. He smashed bananas and poured them into a bottle with some sugar, water and yeast before sealing it up and waiting.

A week later Samuel cautiously opened the bottle and took a sip. It was awful but for one brief moment when the taste hit his tongue, all his worries melted away.

And so Samuel started making wine in earnest. Over time he refined the process and soon had a steady supply of drinkable wine.

Eventually, he shared it with The Five who were skeptical at first but soon came to appreciate the sweet escape each glass provided.

The group's dangerous journey took them through war-torn villages, across long stretches of desert dotted with landmines, over mountains that rose like jagged teeth from the earth. Each night they would gather around a small fire, passing around a bottle of Samuel's homemade wine. With each sip they felt braver, their fears melting away as they stared into the flames.

One night as they drank they heard a noise coming from somewhere in camp. They jumped up ready to fight whatever enemy was upon them but found only laughter and singing.

They followed the sound to see their guide - an old woman named Ama who claimed she knew shortcuts through treacherous territory - dancing alone under the stars swaying back forth as if carried by invisible waves.

She turned to them and beckoned them closer singing softly:

"Drink from this blessed cup

And your fears shall be erased

No darkness shall you fear

For you are children of the sun"

The five men looked at each other quizzically then shrugged and took turns drinking from a battered tin cup she held out to them.

It was unlike any wine they had ever tasted. It was so sweet it felt like their teeth were melting. As the liquid hit their tongues they felt something change inside of them.

Perhaps it was the alcohol hitting their system, but in that moment they were certain she had given them something more than just a cup of wine.

They turned to Ama, ready to ask her what magic she had used, but found only an empty space where she had been standing. They looked around in confusion before giving up and going back to their fire

The men wrapped themselves in blankets and slept deeply for the first time in weeks, their dreams filled with birdsong and soft breezes carrying the scent of flowers.

The next morning as they set off on another day of walking through hell, each man filled his flask with Samuel's wine before strapping it to his waist.

As the days wore on they would take small sips from the flask during breaks or at night when they stopped to rest for a few precious hours.

Each sip brought them closer to that feeling they'd had under the stars that first night with Ama - fearless, invincible. It was as if all the burdens of war and loss and death had been washed away by this blessed liquid.

Their journey took them through years of fighting and killing until one day they woke up in a different country than when they fell asleep.

They stood on top of a hill overlooking endless fields dotted with villages. The war was over; peace had finally come.

They shared the contents of their flasks one last time then scattered across this new land - teachers, doctors, farmers, leaders - doing whatever needed to be done to help rebuild from years of violence and destruction.

And so it came to pass that five brave warriors changed their nation forever thanks to a small campfire under a star-filled sky and a battered tin cup full of magic.
