Shadows of Redemption: Unraveling the Secrets of Anna Müller

The three of them stood at the edge of the forest, looking out on a large plain. The sun was beginning to set, casting a glow that made the grass look like it was on fire. A gentle breeze helped to carry away the smell of decay from the nearby city.

“We will wait here until nightfall,” said Johannes. “There could easily be patrols out here, and we would rather not be caught in daylight.”

Anna wasn't too comfortable with staying out there all day, but she didn't say anything. She had learned that it was best to follow orders. She would do what Johannes said for now. It wasn't like he would try to hurt her or anything. They had been friends for a long time by now, so she knew that he wouldn't just leave her out there all alone. Maybe they'll go back after dark and find somewhere to sleep instead of traveling all day? Maybe not though. They didn't have much money left between them, and they couldn't afford a room anywhere anyway. Maybe they would find another village to stay in overnight? That didn't seem likely though.

They spent the afternoon sitting in the tall grass and talking while they waited for the sky to get dark enough that they can go into town without being noticed by anyone who may be watching. The conversation turned to Anna's family again, as it often did when they were bored or waiting for something else to happen. Anna's father had passed away two years ago after a bad fall from a horse during a hunt gone wrong. He broke his leg in several places and quickly developed gangrene that spread to his lungs; two weeks later he was dead from blood poisoning. Her mother died before him from consumption after her fourth child was born stillborn during another difficult pregnancy. Anna's older brother has been working his way up in the religious order ever since he joined when his father passed away, and still lives with their aunt in town. He sends letters home every once in a while, but he never talks about what he is doing or where he is going in them anymore so they never know if they have changed locations or not because they don't even know where he works anymore. The second oldest joined an army regiment as soon as he came of age, so at least they can always write him letters and know that they are getting through although he doesn't always reply right away because of how busy he always seems to be with military duties.

"What about your aunt?" asked Johannes after she finished telling him her life story for probably the hundredth time. "Has she gotten married yet?"

"Of course not," replied Anna, "she is forty-seven years old! Who would want someone her age?"

Johannes shrugged, "I don't know," he said, "surely someone must want her."

Anna knew what he meant by this comment; Johannes always thought that she should marry him after all it had been ten years now, but Anna wasn't sure if she wanted to get married; especially not to him! Sure, it wasn't fair - after all, she had been going on adventures with him for ten years now, but she just wasn't sure if marriage was something she wanted for herself yet! After all, getting married meant having a lifelong commitment to someone; which sounded nice, but also daunting. And besides, if she got married, they wouldn't be able to continue their thrilling adventures together, which was half the reason why she liked being friends with him in the first place! So no, marriage was a bad idea right now, no matter how much either of them wanted it! Besides, even if she did decide that she wanted to marry him, then there was no way someone his age could afford to support a wife - especially not a wife who used to be an assassin for goodness' sake - so if he did want to marry her, then either his parents would have to pay for it, OR worse yet, SHE would have to support both of them herself due to the likelihood that he wouldn't be able to earn enough money himself! Oh well...maybe someday...someday...after she became financially stable on her own (not likely though) perhaps then she'd consider marrying him...but probably not...probably not...at least not anytime soon...who knows though, maybe someday...someday...something could happen....

As the sun gradually dipped below the horizon, bathing the sky in shades of deep orange and crimson, Johannes and Anna felt the cool evening air settle around them. It was finally time to venture into the city, their destination for the night. Adrenaline coursed through their veins as they prepared to navigate the dark streets and alleyways, careful to avoid any unwanted attention.

Anna's mind was still dwelling on the topic of marriage as they embarked on their nocturnal journey.
