Reversing Medusa's Fate
·
Published 5/21/2023In the year 4000, powerful Alana, the last descendant of legendary Medusa, lands on a strange planet ruled by none other than her deadliest adversary: goddess Athena in disguise. Utilizing her godly powers and intense wit, Alana embarks on a seemingly impossible mission to overthrow Athena and reverse the hunt to protect her people, despite feeling abandoned by victory.

It was a perfect day for hunting. The weather was pleasantly cool, the skies were clear and there was as little wind as possible. Perched on top of an enormous building, I surveyed the landscape below me and quietly waited for my prey to appear. My bare feet rested gently against the slick concrete wall as I leaned forward, my palms flat against the heat-radiating surface in front of me. I narrowed my eyes and began to scan for potential targets.
“Scanning for targets… Searching for life signs…”
My body shook rhythmically as my mind struggled to process the multitude of information being fed into it from the advanced scanning equipment implanted into my brain. It wasn’t just that my brain could process all this information; it was more like I could actually feel it within me.
As if I had a sixth sense, like a bat or something. A thousand different images flashed through my mind as I tried to focus on the individuals that stood out most to me. That was when one caught my attention. He was walking hurriedly down the street below me, but his thoughts were so loud and frantic that they filled every inch of space around me, almost like white noise in a crowded room. But unlike white noise, these thoughts did not blend together into a indistinct pool of sound, they were sharp and distinct, each one cutting through the other with razor-like precision and clarity.
I felt myself drawn towards him, compelled by something beyond my control as he rushed past many others who did not stand out nearly so much as he did in their minds. At first, I couldn’t understand why he seemed so different from everyone else around him; his thoughts were erratic and wild and filled with fear and pain and betrayal… but then I found myself able to read those thoughts for what they really were: lies and half-truths meant to deceive others into thinking that he was sane when in reality he wasn’t even close to it. There was deception and manipulation at every turn in his mind, yet no matter how hard he tried he could not hide from me.
He wanted freedom from all his worries and fears but he also craved power over those who tormented him so mercilessly… He sought affection from those who would never love him back in return, then hated them for their apathy towards him… He longed to be powerful enough to wield a sword of vengeance against those who wronged him… but secretly feared that doing so would end up backfiring on him somehow; that perhaps he would be killed in retribution by those same ones who hurt him because they were too powerful…
The more I read his thoughts, the clearer they became until I could see them perfectly through a glass darkly: his name was Ephraim Solberg and he was plagued by shallow relationships with people who only cared about themselves instead of looking deeper into his soul where they might have seen someone worth loving more than themselves instead of using him like a tool or toolbox when needed, then throwing him away like trash once he wore out or lost his usefulness to them.
I felt myself being pulled closer and closer towards Ephraim until finally I found myself standing next to him on the sidewalk along with countless others as we passed each other on our respective paths without noticing each other despite how close we stood together… until eventually we made eye contact across the street at one another before moving on our separate ways again without saying a word to each other or even acknowledging the fact that we had made eye contact with one another until now no less!
What? What? *What?* *Why?* *How is this happening?* “How do you know my name?! Who are you?!” Fear coursed through his thoughts once more as he turned around and looked behind himself at me but quickly turned right back around again when he didn’t see anything there behind him except a woman walking her dog a few meters behind us as she smiled briefly at us both before continuing on her path down the sidewalk towards her destination down the street which turned out to be none other than HIS destination!
Anger quickly displaced any fear Ephraim might have felt towards me once more as he realized that his stalker had been following him all along without revealing herself until now no less! “I didn’t say anything! How is it that you can hear everything I am thinking?! Why are you even here?! What do you want from me?!” Hurt anger flowed uncontrolled through all corners of his mind as frustration boiled over within him once more before being replaced by sadness once more which quickly shifted into hatred once more before finally shifting back into sadness once more after some time had passed where nothing happened between us while we walked slowly side by side towards a destination unknown to both of us where we would meet up with three other individuals whose sole purpose was nothing short of helping Ephraim get what he had always wanted: power over those who tormented him so relentlessly over the years!
