Explorers of the Deep Dark Sea
·
Published 5/30/2023A brave but quiet group of explorers courageously plunges into the unknown depths of the 22nd century ocean, where they must face a lurking monster in order to retrieve a mysterious object and uncover a dark secret – but will they survive, and more importantly, will the answer remain unknown?

"We're running low on air," said the Captain.
"I know that, Captain." The First Mate replied. "If we don't get this air tank soon, we're not gonna make it."
The Captain and First Mate were staring at each other through the glass of their diving helmets. They had been in such a situation before, and they knew what to do.
"Alright then, let's dive. I'll lead the way." Said the Captain. He pointed his finger towards the floor of the ocean and dashed deeper into the abyss, aiming for the faint blue light between the waves of green and blue as his leader followed him closely behind. The rest of the crew were following close behind them as best as they could; these men had been trained for such situations, after all.
As they got closer to where they believed to be finding their air tank, a large shadow moved in front of them. It was covered in barnacles and moved erratically around them, seeming like it was trying to get away from something else lurking deeper in the water.
The Captain raised his hand signaling a halt. He turned around and gestured to his crew to stop moving in order to avoid attracting attention towards themselves. They all stood still at once and stared at where they had seen the shadow disappear into, but only bubbles rose up along with some debris that seemed to have been kicked up by whatever was down there moving so quickly through the watery depths.
"What was that?" Asked one of the crewmen who was further back from the Captain and First Mate.
They didn't answer him at first because they were too busy trying to figure out what had just happened themselves. After about a minute, though, their curiosity got the better of them and they found an excuse to ignore their lone crewman's question; after all, if anyone joined them on this expedition then it would only be so that they couldn't take all of their money for themselves when everything went south. The Captain turned back around and continued swimming towards where he knew he saw that shadow disappear into earlier with his First Mate following closely behind him.
The two men suddenly stopped moving forward when they found something strange in front of them: there was a large object floating above their heads that looked like it had fallen off a shipwreck or something similar. It was made out of metal with familiar shapes engraved into its surface; most importantly though, it had an air tank connected to it that seemed like it hadn't run out yet despite being so far away from any harbor or even shipwreck for miles around this area where they were currently swimming underneath a dark sea lit only by sparse glowing lights placed on small buoys here and there throughout this part of the ocean floor.
"Can you believe my luck? I'd say that's my lucky day for sure." Said the Captain as he grabbed hold of the air tank attached to this mysterious object and took a deep breath from its valve before handing it over to his First Mate who did the same thing before handing it back to him so he could take another breath while he caught his breath as well after keeping up with him during their long swim down here into what must have been uncharted territory down here at least according to their map which wasn't always right anyway despite having been updated just last week by satellite imagery provided by NASA itself so even without this air tank they might not have been able to find safety among any nearby islands or landmasses no matter how much effort they put into doing so anyway because if anything went wrong with their submarine or if some kind of underwater volcanic eruption happened nearby then everyone onboard would be dead within minutes anyways; there would be no point in continuing onwards like this seeking out any kind of civilization when there wouldn't be any left when you got there anyways unless something changed in just under five minutes' time which would probably never happen considering how long man has spent trying to reach Mars but hasn't gotten anywhere because it's too damn hard plus there are already other reasons why we can never go there too but those reasons are way more complicated than just saying "oh yeah that's right you need oxygen underwater too otherwise you'll drown" because you know how humans are always looking for ways to solve problems? Well sometimes we just find ways around those problems instead; either way though this is really getting off topic now so let's try not to go off on tangents anymore alright?)
"Whatcha wanna do with this thing?" Asked the First Mate while pointing at the metal object above their heads. "Do we keep going?"
