The merfolk gathered at the edge of the ocean. The water was high and they could see humans swimming with their backs to them, their dorsal fins only just above the surface.

"Fascinating," said one of them. "What are those strange creatures?"

"I have seen a few on land," said another. "We should go meet them."

"If we do that, how will we return home again?" asked a third.

There was silence for a few moments as the group considered this. Then someone spoke up: "We can swim in and touch them, then swim back again."

"But then we won't be able to speak with them," pointed out a fourth voice. "And what if they took us away from here? What would happen to our families?"

"True," conceded the second speaker. "Perhaps we should send some of our own to meet with them first. If they don't like it, they can return and tell us why."

After some discussion it was decided that a small party should make the journey, but only after dark, when there would be fewer people on the beach. Meanwhile, some of the younger merfolk should be sent back to tell their families what had been decided. So off they swam, leaving behind those who were too young or too old, or otherwise unable to travel far from home. The rest made themselves comfortable on rocks or dried seaweed or whatever else they could find, and waited until they felt the tugging at their tails that told them night had fallen and it was time to set off for land.

The moon hung high in the starlit sky, casting a silver glow upon the ocean's surface. As the merfolk emerged from the depths, their scales shimmered and glistened like precious jewels. They swam in a synchronized formation, their movements graceful and fluid, propelled by the powerful strokes of their tails.

The beach was deserted, save for a few stragglers huddled around a bonfire in the distance. The merfolk cautiously approached the shoreline, their keen eyes fixed on the flickering flames. They marveled at the dancing shadows cast upon the sand, curious to explore this foreign world.
