“That’s the one.”

I could hear a gruff voice behind me. I turned around to look at him. He was standing right behind me, so close that I could smell his cigar in my hair. His eyes were bulging out of their sockets and he was pointing at a dress that had been chosen for me by my stylist.

“This is for your presentation, isn’t it?” Emir asked with a hint of sarcasm in his tone.

“Yes, but… why are you here?” I snapped back at him. He had been following me around all day, watching who I talked to, what I ate and even my every movement. It was getting annoying, but I kept telling myself that it was only because he cared about me and wanted to protect me.

“You think you can do this on your own? You need someone there with you today, Disha! Someone who knows the market better than you do!” He barked at me like a drill sergeant scolding a private for not taking things seriously enough. “And besides, you don’t really want to look like a fool in front of everyone in that dress now do you? This thing makes you look like a piece of meat!”

He elbowed me on my side and gave me a sly smile.

I took a deep breath trying to calm down my anger before replying back to him in his native language: “I know exactly what the dress looks like! And trust me – no one is going to be looking at anything else other than my face when they see me wearing this baby! Now leave before I make sure you don’t get another promotion ever again!”

A few hours later I found myself standing on stage in front of a room full of people while holding a microphone in my hand while Emir stood behind me with a huge grin on his face knowing that he had won the argument between us earlier that day. My boss had managed to convince one of our investors as well as the head honchos from some big companies to join us for dinner tonight after the presentation so he had insisted on being present there as well. Everyone else thought it was strange that Emir was joining us since he wasn't an official part of our company and didn't have any role to play in today's event except for being my boyfriend. But after explaining how important he was to our company's growth rate and future success, they had agreed without asking any further questions about him or our relationship.

While I was preparing for the presentation, Emir had been sitting on the couch next to where I stood putting on make-up trying to teach me how to apply makeup properly so that I looked presentable when we went out tonight with the investors but ended up making things worst than they already were. He had kept telling me how beautiful I looked while he sat there spouting random nonsense. By the time we were ready to go, Emir seemed tired from smoking too much cigars during the afternoon so instead of taking one of our cars we decided to take an Uber since he needed some fresh air before we went out tonight too tired to drive himself anyways. We got into the car together where I sat down next to him and held his hand as we began talking about how well things would go tonight after my presentation which would put us on top if everyone else saw it too. While we were talking though, Emir suddenly got quiet and started staring at something outside just as we arrived at our destination where everyone was waiting for us already including all those investors who wanted to invest money into our company.

As each investor returned home after watching my presentation they all seemed very happy with what they saw but none more happy than Emir himself who called them up individually over the next couple weeks unable to hide his excitement over what they said about my performance during those three hours last night where everyone continued praising my efforts over dinner before finally deciding that investing more money into our company would be good for them as well since it seemed like things were looking great for us with all those new technologies we were working on every week with our engineers and other staff members who worked endlessly without rest towards achieving success without even needing anyone else's help except for mine until eventually….

...our company became a roaring success, thanks to the collective efforts of the entire team. The investors were impressed by the innovative solutions we presented and the potential growth they saw in our market. Emir couldn't contain his excitement, hailing it as a personal victory for both of us. But deep down, I knew there was more to our success than meets the eye.

As weeks turned into months, Emir's obsession with our professional lives grew stronger. He went from being protective to being possessive, constantly monitoring my interactions and checking my phone for any signs of betrayal. Meeting with male colleagues or even having harmless conversations with friends became a source of contention, leading to heated arguments and harsh words. It seemed as though his insecurities were spiraling out of control.

One evening, as I sat in our living room, sifting through emails from potential clients, Emir stormed in, his face flushed with anger. He grabbed my laptop and flung it across the room, shattering it into pieces. His eyes bore into mine with a mix of rage and desperation.

"You think you can succeed without me?" he seethed, his voice trembling with fury. "You owe everything to me, Disha! I made you who you are!"

Tears welled up in my eyes as I realized the depth of his delusion. I had always been grateful for Emir's support, but he had twisted it into a toxic control over my life. The success of our company was no longer a shared triumph; it had become a tool for him to manipulate me. I had let it happen, convincing myself that this was his way of showing love and care. But now, I couldn't let it go on any longer.

Summoning every ounce of courage, I stood up from the wreckage and faced Emir, my voice steady but filled with a newfound determination. "You didn't make me who I am, Emir. I worked hard for my success, and it's time for me to reclaim my independence. Our relationship should be based on trust and love, not control and possessiveness."

Emir's expression twisted with a mix of anger and disbelief. He tried to argue, to justify his actions, but I held my ground, refusing to let him dictate my worth. Slowly, the realization of his toxic behavior began to sink in, and I could see a flicker of remorse in his eyes.

Days turned into weeks, and Emir began to show signs of change. He attended therapy sessions to work on his possessiveness and control issues. I, too, sought solace in counseling, knowing that healing from this toxic relationship would take time. We decided to give ourselves time and space, taking a break from our romantic involvement but maintaining a professional connection within the company.

As our company continued to flourish, I found support in my colleagues and friends, who had witnessed the toll Emir's possessiveness had taken on me. Their encouragement, along with my newfound strength, helped me rebuild my self-esteem and reclaim my autonomy. I realized that true success comes from within, from the belief in oneself and the ability to persevere through challenges.

Months later, our paths crossed again at a company event. Emir approached me with a mixture of apprehension and sincerity. He expressed remorse for his past behavior and acknowledged the damage he had caused. He had undergone significant personal growth, and it showed in his words and actions.

Although forgiveness was a long and arduous journey, I understood that people can change. We decided to give our relationship another chance, this time with a stronger foundation built on trust, respect, and personal growth. It wasn't easy, but we committed to supporting each other's individual quests for success without sacrificing our own identities.

Together, Emir and I became advocates for healthy relationships within the workplace and beyond. We spoke at conferences, shared our stories, and offered guidance to those caught in similar toxic dynamics. Our company continued to flourish, not only in terms of financial success but also in fostering a supportive and inclusive environment.

As I looked back on the journey I had taken, I realized that true success isn't defined by external achievements alone. It's about finding the strength to break free from toxic dynamics, embracing personal growth, and fostering healthy relationships built on trust and respect.

And so, with renewed hope and a steadfast determination, Emir and I embarked on a new chapter of our lives, one that celebrated our individual successes while nurturing a love that had been battered but emerged stronger than ever.
