Valen's Brave Passage

The world around me was a haze, filled with the scent of blood. My hands gripped my sword as I waited for the magical shield to disappear. The creature before me had small wings that dragged on the ground, a long tail that ended in a sharp tip, and it's teeth were longer then most of my fingers. It's head was an odd shape with two horns that stuck out from the sides of it's head.

"What do you think you are doing?" It growled at me, "You can't kill me, I'm immortal! Your pitiful blade is nothing to me!"

I shook my head as I looked down at my sword. 'It won't be pitiful for much longer,' I thought to myself as I tightened my grip on the hilt. There was a flash and a screech as the shield disappeared.

I swung my sword at it's neck, but the creature twisted away from it. It lunged forward and bit into my shoulder, causing pain to shoot through my body. Blood began to spread through my robes as I grabbed it's snout and pushed it away from me. "You're not immortal." I said as I swung again and this time cut deeply into its side.

It screamed in agony as it fell to the ground and thrashed about wildly, trying to get away from me. With a loud cry of victory, I sliced off it's head and held up the severed head above me. The creatures eyes glowed faintly red as they stared lifelessly at me before they closed forever.

I smiled down at what would have been their leader and looked around at the bodies that littered the floor of this strange land. Their armor was made of a strange material, made to look like feathers that covered their bodies from neck to toe and their weapons were strange too, spears with tips made of stone or bone instead of iron or steel and swords made out of a type of metal that I'd never seen before.

"Valen." Someone called out to me, "Valen! Where are you?"

"Over here!" I yelled back to them as I turned around in circles looking for them, but everywhere I searched was just full of dead creatures who had attacked this town. "This way! There are survivors over here!"

The footsteps running towards me sounded like they belonged to one person instead of many so there must only be one survivor left alive here... But if there is only one then who is calling out for me?

A young woman burst out of one of the buildings nearby carrying a bundle in her arms with another trailing behind her carrying food in his arms. He was covered in cuts and bruises while she looked fine other than being exhausted, which explained why she needed help carrying supplies back to where they were staying while he helped defend them against these creatures earlier today. They ran over to me with grateful smiles on their faces before they started thanking me profusely for saving them all those years ago when I defeated those strange monsters like this one here today.
