Livio's Whisper of Harmony
·
Published 6/22/2023In a treacherous journey across Italy's picturesque landscape, the mischievous Livio – a daring and loquacious 10-year-old – leads his struggling family towards salvation, as he devises an audacious plan that takes them from the brink of poverty to triumphant triumph. But as Livio's courage and cunning reveal unforeseen hurdles, will his high-octane antics illuminate the path to success or lead them further astray?
In a Time gone by, in the Town of Verona ….
“Livio! Get in your room right now!” My father yelled out to me, who was raiding the larder on my way to my room. I quickly jumped over to the table and hid behind one of the chairs. I could hear my father stomping up the stairs with my mother following him. I heard them open and close the door of my bedroom. In that moment, while they were distracted, I snuck out and ran down the hall to their bedroom. I quietly opened the door so not to make any noise; They had no idea that I knew how to do that.
I made sure to lock it behind me so that they couldn’t get out until I was gone. The house was quiet, most of my siblings had gone out into town already, but I knew from past experiences that there were some who still remained inside. It was silent for just a few moments before I heard a rustling in another room.
I was scared for a moment but then remembered what God told us about being afraid and decided that if he could speak to lions why can’t he let me face mice?
I looked around and saw a large box full of hay in the corner of the room. “Perfect!” I thought.
The rustling started again and got closer to where I was hiding as I climbed into the box of hay. The little mice started slowly climbing out of their holes one by one; they were hungry too after all! That is why they were making all that noise. They were starving! Just like us!
I didn’t mind sharing with them after all, my Mother always said we should share with other people if we can, especially when they are hungry or poor like us!
I smiled at them as they ate and thought how much fun it would be if I could have friends like this every day! Then suddenly…my smile faded….but how? How could these mice ever be friends with me? Maybe God could make some mice smarter…after all he did create us in his own image…but no…that wasn’t it….maybe he could give them some manners? My thoughts wandered for many years as the mice finished eating and scampered off back into their holes…..only it wasn’t just one mouse……or two….or three….or four…..it was dozens…hundreds even! All different kinds too….White ones, black ones, big ones, small ones……and they weren’t alone….they brought their friends…..all sorts of animals too…..birds, rats, cats……..and more! Some you didn’t even want to know where they lived let alone see them up close!
*Gulp* “God? Is this really happening?”
The animals continued approaching me until there were so many of them that you couldn’t even see anymore except for their eyes peeking out from here and there in between each other! There was such a racket going on now that you couldn’t hear yourself think anymore! But then just as soon as it started it stopped……..except for a few lone animals who kept trying to get a word in…..but everyone else had had enough for now……something about “too much noise” or something like that….like God telling us not to swear or tell lies or gossip or steal or kill or covet our neighbors wife or so many other things……things we don’t even think about any more because we live in such peace now thanks for God taking care of us who knows how long ago…..things we take for granted everyday just because God works through us now instead of doing everything himself……things that are better than our wildest dreams sometimes (like computers!), things we don’t even understand anymore because we either took them for granted or lost interest in them when something new came along……..but most important, things we simply never dreamed were possible at all before God showed up…..things that changed our lives forever…..things we never thought could be possible without him……..but wait a minute…what are they talking about? Why are they looking at me like that? What am I thinking about again? Oh yes those foolish thoughts about being friends with those silly mice in *that* dream….where did I leave off again? Oh yes…those animals looking at me like that…oh no…are they angry with me again? What did I do wrong this time? Why do they look so scary? Have they seen something scary? Am I gonna get punished again……..but no….we don’t get punished anymore….we don’t have to be scared anymore either……..so why do they look so angry at me all of a sudden like that?!
"What did *you* do?!"
Oh no….they mean ME right?! What did *I* do?! Did someone tell a lie or steal something from someone else?! Did someone lie about somebody else behind their back?! Did somebody say something mean about someone else when God told us not to spread gossip and rumors!? Did somebody try stealing from someone else?! Oh no!! Oh no!! Oh no!! What did *I* do??!! What did *I* DO???!!
As the animals stared at me with their piercing eyes, my heart raced and panic welled up inside me. I wracked my brain, desperately trying to recall any wrongdoing that could have caused this display of anger. But why were they looking directly at me? What did *I* do to deserve their wrath?
Suddenly, a voice broke through the deafening silence. It was a gentle, yet firm voice that seemed to echo from all directions. "Livio," the voice spoke, its tone soothing and comforting. "You have done nothing wrong."
I squinted my eyes, searching for the source of the voice, but all I could see were the animals still staring at me intently. The voice continued, its words enveloping my senses, "These animals have not gathered here out of anger or retribution. They have been guided here by a force greater than themselves. A force that has recognized your kind heart and yearning for companionship."
Confusion washed over me as I struggled to comprehend the voice's words. Kind heart? Yearning for companionship? How could they possibly know any of that about me? Yet as I looked into the eyes of the animals, a flicker of something akin to understanding passed through their gazes and a warmth spread through my chest.
The voice spoke again, a tinge of amusement coloring its tone. "You see, Livio, these animals have been gifted with an extraordinary ability—one that allows them to perceive the true nature and intentions of those they encounter. They have seen your compassion, your longing for connection, and they have come here to offer their friendship."
A mixture of awe and disbelief swirled inside me. Could this be true? Could these animals truly sense something within me that I had struggled to find within myself? Tentatively, I stepped forward, cautiously approaching the animals that towered over me.
As if sensing my trepidation, a small, white mouse emerged from the crowd. Its tiny body quivered with excitement as it scurried toward me, stopping just inches from my feet. Its bright eyes sparkled with a mix of curiosity and anticipation.
I knelt down, meeting the mouse at eye level. Something inside me softened, drawn to the purity and innocence that radiated from the small creature. Slowly, I extended my hand, and to my surprise, the mouse didn't shy away but instead climbed onto my palm, its delicate paws tickling my skin.
The voice chimed in once again, its words resonating with the magic that filled the air. "Livio, these animals are here to be your companions, to remind you that friendship can be found in the most unexpected places. They have come to show you that true connection knows no bounds and transcends societal norms."
Tears welled up in my eyes as a mixture of gratitude, joy, and wonder overwhelmed my being. In this moment, I realized that the isolation I had felt for so long was but a figment of my imagination. The universe had heard my silent plea for companionship and had answered it in a way that only the divine could orchestrate.
As I looked around at the myriad of animals surrounding me, their eyes brimming with acceptance and warmth, I understood that this was a new chapter in my life. A chapter where prejudice and judgement had no place, where friendship could blossom from the purest of intentions, regardless of appearances or backgrounds.
And so, hand in hand with my newfound animal companions, I ventured forth into a world where the boundaries of friendship were rewritten, where the extraordinary became ordinary, and where love and acceptance reigned supreme. In the Town of Verona, a place once defined by unyielding divisions, a new era of unity and understanding was dawning—one that would forever change the fabric of our existence.
