Secrets of the Bronze Heart

"You're a terrible liar Ted."

Silence.

Ted's head hung low, he couldn't bear to look at Helen. They'd been on the road for hours now and still not a word had been said between them. The journey was long, from the confines of the forest they'd made their home, across the grassy hillside, through the fields and into the vast expanse of what once was a city. It had been that way for many years since the great fire. Now only ruins remained, ruins that were once so alive with people and life. Now everything was dead, still and cold. Their destination was one of those ruins - a place that seemed to have been forgotten by everyone else; all but ignored - save for Ted, his family and Helen.

The thought of it now made Helen's heart ache in a way she'd not felt in years, it was a physical pain that settled deep within her chest and grew with each passing step - like an infection festering under her skin. She looked over at Ted again noticing how tired he looked - how old. She wanted to reach out to him, to touch him and kiss him like she did so many years ago but she knew she couldn't. Not after what she'd seen today. He was gone from her now, stolen by another woman who bore his name and bore his children - children that he would never tell Helen about because he didn't want her to know about them. He loved her deeply but some things were best kept secret - he'd always said that - even though Helen didn't agree with him. Secrets like this though? This was different; it went against everything they believed in together. Things had changed drastically since those days when they first met in The City and escaped the clutches of an oppressive regime led by a man named Samuel - a man who ruled over them with an iron fist until he died after falling ill during one harsh winter. After that they lived peacefully in The Forest where they raised their two daughters as a family but then one day tragedy struck and their daughters were taken away by men intent on performing experiments upon them to see if they could be useful tools for the world outside of The Forest just as Samuel had done with Helen many moons ago before discovering she possessed unique abilities that helped her escape his clutches and return home to The Forest where she fell in love with Ted and they made their own family together. It was an awful time though as Helen watched helplessly from afar whilst her daughters suffered being experimented upon by doctors who had no idea what they were doing which caused their deaths leaving Ted broken-hearted and blaming himself for not protecting them better which is why he swore never to leave The Forest again fearing for his own life if he did so - until today when Helen found out about these children hidden away from her because Ted feared she would disapprove of them or worse yet demand that they never be born because she feared for their safety just like she feared for hers when those doctors began experimenting on her daughters causing their deaths in the process...

"Why?" Was all Helen could manage to say without breaking down into tears but it wasn't meant as a question directed towards Ted or even anyone else but herself instead because she needed to understand why it was that Ted hid this from her when it was something that meant so much to both of them... "I'm your soul mate remember?"

Tears welled up in his eyes as his gaze met hers suddenly making hers drop down to the ground below them instead... "I know you are honey but please understand why I did what I did..." His voice cracked slightly as he spoke continuing on through the silence between them... "I can't lose you again."

Helen stopped walking causing Ted to stop too as she turned around slowly facing him and wiping away the tears from beneath her eyes refusing to look any further than his feet underneath him... "Them," She finally managed to say after clearing her throat... "You can't lose THEM either can you?" She asked before letting out a bitter laugh at what must've seemed like such a stupid question to ask someone who was trying so hard to keep this secret hidden from her when there was nothing else left for either of them except each other... "You can't keep me here forever Ted!" She shouted unable to stop herself as more tears began streaming down her face mixing with dirt and grime making her face appear even older than it really was... "What happened to wanting me there with you?" Her voice shook violently along with everything else inside of her as all of those thoughts flooded back into her mind at once re-opening wounds that had lain dormant for many years now thanks in part due to everything Ted had done for her since finding him out here all alone all those years ago... "What about our granddaughters?"

Ted stood still, his eyes filled with sorrow. He knew he couldn't hide the truth any longer. The weight of his secrets pressed down on him, threatening to crush his spirit. He had thought that by keeping the existence of their granddaughters hidden, he could protect Helen from the pain and heartbreak that plagued their family. But now, as he looked into her tear-stricken face, he realized that he had only caused more harm.

The wind rustled through the desolate city, bringing with it a chilling reminder of the world they had left behind. Ted took a step towards Helen, his voice heavy with regret, "I thought I was doing what was best for you, for all of us. The world out there," he looked out towards the ruins surrounding them, "it's not like the Forest. It's dangerous, Helen."

She shook her head, her voice laced with defiance, "I know it's dangerous, Ted. But we've faced danger before, and we've come through it stronger. Our granddaughters..." her voice trailed off, choked with emotion.
