The rain poured heavily onto the muddy streets of Eldrador, turning them into a chaotic sea of sludge. The city was a shadow of its former glory, buildings crumbling, and debris scattered everywhere. The once-great capital of the dragon lords now lay in ruins, its people gone or hiding.

Amidst the destruction, a young boy named Kael huddled in an alleyway, his tattered clothes soaked through. He clutched a small loaf of bread close to his chest, his only source of sustenance for days. Hunger gnawed at his stomach, but fear kept him hidden.

Kael was an orphan, one of many left behind when the dragons fell from power. They were hunted mercilessly by those who saw them as the cause of Eldrador's downfall. Kael had lost everything that day - his family, his home - and he vowed to survive.

As he waited for the rain to let up, a commotion caught Kael's attention. He peered out from his hiding spot and saw a group of men approaching. They were armed with swords and carried themselves with an air of authority.

"Another sweep," one of them said with a sneer. "Gotta find those damn dragonspawn."

Kael's heart pounded in his chest as he realized they were searching for orphans like him. He pressed himself further into the alleyway, praying they wouldn't notice him.

But luck was not on Kael's side that day. One of the men spotted him cowering in the shadows and called out to his companions.

"We've got one!" he shouted with glee.

Kael's blood turned to ice as he realized there was no escape. The men closed in on him, their swords glinting ominously in the dim light.

"Please," Kael whispered desperately, tears mixing with rain on his cheeks.

But the men showed no mercy. They grabbed Kael roughly, pulling him out into the open.

"Well, well," one of them said with a cruel grin. "What have we here?"

Kael looked up at his captors with defiance, even as fear coursed through his veins.

"Let me go," he said, his voice trembling but determined.

The men laughed at his futile plea, their amusement turning to cruelty.

"We should kill him," one of them suggested. "Can't risk any more dragonspawn running around."

Kael's heart sank at the words. He knew what they saw when they looked at him - the last remnant of a once-great race that had fallen from power.

But before the men could carry out their brutal plan, a voice rang out from above.

"Leave him be."

All eyes turned to the figure standing on a nearby rooftop. She was cloaked in shadow, her features hidden, but there was an air of power about her that made even the armed men hesitate.

"He's just a child," she continued coldly. "You've shed enough innocent blood."

The men exchanged uneasy glances, clearly torn between their orders and self-preservation.

"Fine," one of them muttered finally. "But if he causes any trouble..."

The woman didn't acknowledge their threat as she leapt from the rooftop and landed gracefully beside Kael. She pulled back her hood to reveal long silver hair and piercing blue eyes.

"You're lucky I got here in time," she said without emotion. "We need to talk."

Kael stared at her in awe and confusion. Who was this woman? And why did she care about his fate?

As if sensing his questions, she sighed impatiently and held out her hand.

"My name is Lyra," she said simply. "And I think you might be more important than you realize."
