Abel and Emily's Epic Adventure
·
Published 5/25/2023In Crescent Town, 19th century America, feisty Abel Ormond and his determined former classmate Emily passionately seek to defy the seemingly ordinary world around them by embarking on an action-packed adventure to discover true love, fortune, and triumphant justice.
It all started on a dusty day in the middle of summer. I had just finished my work for the day and was walking to my little shack when I saw her.
It was Emily, my childhood crush and someone I still thought about often, even though we hadn't seen each other in years. She was strolling down the dusty road, carrying a large basket on her arm. She moved with grace, like a dancer. Her hair shone like bronze in the sunlight, and she wore a light blue dress that moved with her and billowed softly in the wind. Her eyes were as blue as the sky overhead.
I froze where I stood and couldn't look away from her as she walked down the road. She stopped right in front of me and smiled at me, looking just as beautiful as ever.
"Hello there, Abel." The sound of her voice sent shivers down my spine, but they were good shivers. She sounded happy to see me.
"Hi..." I said after what felt like an eternity. "You're looking... radiant."
She shot me a crooked smile that made my heart melt at the same time it broke it in two. "And you're looking... well, dirty." She laughed lightly and brushed some dust off my shirt. Then she turned around and started walking again, leaving me staring at her back. "Walk with me," she called over her shoulder before starting to hum softly to herself again.
I stood there for a moment longer, staring at the ground and trying to figure out what just happened here before realizing I should probably follow her before she got too far away from me again. I jogged up to her side and fell into step alongside her.
It took us about five minutes of silence before I worked up enough courage to say anything else to her. As we walked through the valley between two hills, I finally found something to say: "So... what brings you here?"
"Oh," she said casually while looking around like she's never been anywhere near here before in her life (which is probably true). "Just on my way to town."
"All by yourself?" She shrugged one shoulder nonchalantly while humming another tune under her breath. "My mom asked if I could go pick up some supplies for dinner tonight." She gave me a sidelong glance with those big blue eyes that made me feel weak in the knees again (it didn't help that I was walking along a steep hillside). "Well... see any familiar faces along the way?" She cocked an eyebrow at me while smiling coyly up at me; it looked like she was flirting with me but also teasing me at the same time which confused the hell out of me because why would she be doing that?
