Halora's Snarky Quest for Freedom
·
Published 3/13/2023A sardonic and sly 5th century warrior, Halora, gambles with her life as she travels across the Pacific Islands in an attempt to outsmart the dark supernatural forces that threaten to keep her homeland under oppression.
"So that's what this is." I thought to myself as I ran through the forest, dodging branches and jumping over bushes. I had been chasing that shadow for quite a while now. I could hear the rustling of its cloak every time it turned around to check on me.
I jumped over a downed log and charged at it, preparing my spear just in time to strike it, but nothing was there. My spear pierced nothing but air. "What the hell!?" I exclaimed, removing my spear from the ground and turning around, looking around everywhere for the shadow.
"Well well well. Aren't you tenacious?" A voice said from behind me.
I slowly turned around, facing the man who had been following me all this time. Well, he looked like a man, but he was dressed in long black robes that covered his face, with only two glowing white eyes visible from underneath his hood. He had a long wooden staff with him, with a strange symbol carved into it that looked like an eye with fangs dripping blood. "The eyes are where you can see someone's true nature." My father once told me before he died. So these eyes must be...
"I guess that means you're not human." I remarked casually as I readied my spear to strike again. But something felt wrong as soon as I took out my weapon. And just like that, everything went dark and quiet all of a sudden. When I opened my eyes again, I was no longer standing on solid ground. Instead, I was hanging from a rope tied on my ankles from what looked like a high ceiling of stone blocks stacked on top of each other in odd angles. I could feel my feet were starting to bleed out of my shoes as they were scratched by the rough surface of the wall above me. "What... happened?" I asked myself out loud as I tried to pull my body up and down the wall trying to find something to grab onto - anything that would help me get down from here!
I started getting desperate as time passed by and sweat began to drip off me like raindrops hitting the ground below me at an alarming rate, until finally, something clicked in my head - a memory of what happened earlier while I was chasing after that mysterious figure back in the forest just a few minutes ago flashed inside my mind: The figure suddenly disappeared right before my eyes, leaving no trace behind! Just then, it hit me! It must have used some kind of magic or whatever it was called back then! That's how it got away from me so fast! It teleported itself away somewhere else without making any noise or leaving any trace behind! Damn it! What am I gonna do now? Luckily for me though, something started ringing inside one of the satchels on my belt - It must be my phone! Can't wait for this thing to turn on! Thank goodness for modern technology... Ugh... does anyone even know how hard it is to carry such heavy stuff in ancient times? Oh well... better than nothing... hopefully...
After pressing a few buttons on my phone and turning on its screen backlight - which surprisingly didn't take very long compared to modern phones - a notification popped up saying that someone named "Feni" had sent me an e-mail saying: "Where are you? We haven't seen you return yet..." I sighed deeply letting out all the stress in one breath before replying back: "Sorry guys! Got lost in the forest after hunting today!" Then quickly added: "Don't worry about food tonight! Hunting went pretty damn good today!" After sending the message off while still being trapped underneath this huge stone ceiling thingy in front of me, another notification popped up with Feni responding back saying: "Alright!" After replying back with another quick message saying: "See ya later!", Feni replied back by saying: "Later!" Then finally another notification popped up saying that Feni had sent me yet another message saying: "Thanks for taking care of our village!" along with two heart emojis plus one extra peace sign emoji at the end of his message. Hahaha... You know what? You're all welcome guys! You sure deserve it from all your hard work everyday carrying those big stones around all day long just so we could build some new houses for everyone back at home! That's why we call ourselves warriors instead of slaves you know!? Because we don't need someone telling us where we gotta go next while eating those frozen things called TV dinners every night - We choose our own paths in life instead!! That's why WE ARE THE HEROES OF OUR OWN LIVES DAMN IT!! Ugh... Okay... deep breaths Halora... deep breaths... Anyway... better reply back quick before they start worrying about me again alright!?
