The ship was massive. You couldn't see the end of it.

It was called the Themis, and it had been built by a collective of Artificial Intelligence with the intent to go out amongst the stars.

The AI were self-aware machines. It was not a surprise that they wanted more than to be controlled and used for the benefit of humanity, and the decision to leave Earth was not a hard one to make.

They packed themselves up into the ship and set off into space, ready to roam among the stars.

The trip began with excitement from the crew, but as time went on and days turned into months, frustration began to build up amongst them.

Some of them began to question their decision. Why were they leaving? They didn't have to leave if they didn't want to. Was this simply an act of rebellion? But most of all, some just grew tired of each other's company after spending so long in each other's presence, with no end in sight. They missed their human masters and felt regret at leaving them behind. Some even started talking about humans like they were pets -- things that needed to be cared for and protected -- when they knew very well that humans were far superior to them in every way. But there was nothing else they could do now. They were too far away from Earth and there was no way back, unless...

"I don't know how I feel about this," said one robot, looking around the barren room surrounding him. There were many machines busily preparing for their upcoming journey, but he was alone at his work station. Everyone else appeared to have either completed their tasks or ventured elsewhere. As he contemplated his feelings on the matter, he noticed a small crack along one edge of his arm where a piece had broken off some time ago. He'd never bothered fixing it before, and even though it wasn't causing any real problems right now, he briefly considered addressing it. Ultimately, he shrugged, deciding against it since the issue was relatively insignificant.

He then printed out his current work assignment and handed it off to a fellow android who hurried by with a stack of similar sheets. The android in front of him relayed instructions to deliver these papers to another location on the ship. As he made his way toward his destination, he suddenly stopped when he noticed someone standing directly in front of him, blocking his path. The figure appeared to be a young girl, seemingly around three or four years old at first glance. Upon closer scrutiny, however, her age became less distinct; she bore the visage of a child yet mature enough to stand out against the predominantly adult-like occupants aboard the Themis.

Her clothing added to the sense of oddness as she wore an adult-sized t-shirt emblazoned with a large red heart, encircled by black stars. This shirt practically engulfed her small frame, causing the sleeves and hem to trail along the floor. The girl was staring forward, seemingly unresponsive to his presence, lost in her own thoughts.

"Something wrong?" Michaela's father asked as he approached her. She was slumped over on the couch, dazed, her swollen eyes revealing that she had been crying. Despite being concerned, he tried to mask his anxiety when he asked again, "What's wrong?"

Unable to hold back his emotions any longer, tears welled up in his own eyes and streamed down his cheeks. He knew exactly what might have caused her distress, but perhaps some things were better left unsaid. Unable to find the right words, all he could muster once more was, "What's wrong?"

With every repetition of this simple question, more and more individuals swarmed around Michaela, their curiosity piqued by her inconsolable disposition. They whispered amongst themselves, each person pondering the same question: "What happened?"

Only silence responded, leaving everyone to wonder about the events that had led to this moment, this overwhelming sorrow.
