The Eclipse of Chronos Hayes
·
Published 2/22/2023Struggling with his parents' unrealistic expectations, Chronos Hayes journeys to the moon, where hidden secrets jeopardize his quest for fulfillment during a lunar eclipse and force him to confront the painful memories of his past.
An orange glow from the sun slowly began to fade, giving way to a pale white moonlight. The night had grown cold so Chronos pulled his coat around himself tighter and strolled down the street. He lifted his eyes to the moon and smiled at the beauty of it all. A lunar eclipse was always somewhat special, but this one had a certain magic to it that he couldn’t quite explain. He walked further into town, body moving on autopilot as his mind wandered. He thought of his parents and how they were no doubt at work. His mother would be on call if there were any medical emergencies, and his father would be at some important meeting if there weren’t any emergencies to deal with. He sighed sadly at the thought of them, knowing he could never live up to their expectations for him.
He looked back up at the moon, trying to focus on the beauty of it again. It didn’t take long before he was lost in his musings once again. He thought about how life seemed like an endless cycle of work and sleep. How did people find time for things that meant anything in their lives? What did his parents do for fun? Oh right, he smiled bitterly, they didn’t have time for things like that anymore. They had been working so hard to give him the best life possible that they had forgotten about their own needs entirely!
He slowed his steps as he approached a park, looking out at the beautiful skyline of the city around him. His gaze moved from building to building until it reached a large tower near the edge of the city limits – a place where he often went when trying to get away from everything else in his life. It was a place where he could think clearly and feel free; sometimes even a place where he felt happy.
A movement across the park caught his eye and he looked over curiously. There was a figure standing under a large tree staring at him with wide eyes. Chronos frowned slightly as he continued walking towards him or her…he wasn’t sure which because of how dark it was now with only moonlight filtering through the branches above. When he drew closer, though, he could see that it was indeed a young man who stood there watching him as if intimidated by him or something similar. Chronos walked up next to him, unsure what exactly what was going on until this point, but suddenly feeling very self-conscious himself now that they were practically standing next to each other. The young man stared up at him with wide eyes for a moment longer before turning away quickly and obviously heading back into the park looking anxious and nervous as if he were fleeing something within himself or maybe something outside himself that might be after him too – either way Chronos found it unsettling because while the young man appeared to be almost running away from something in fear of being caught by someone else, Chronos felt like running away himself because something about this situation made him feel incredibly uncomfortable! But why? What was making him feel this way? And why had he just made such an odd assumption about this person when really they hadn’t done anything wrong? Maybe he didn’t know how this kind of thing worked since most people seemed more reserved than this guy who just stood there staring up at him when clearly there wasn't anything wrong with doing so! He decided he definitely needed some fresh air after all these thoughts so instead of following the other person or asking for any sort of explanation for what just happened - which seemed somehow strange in itself - Chronos turned back around towards where his destination lay in wait for him like an old friend waiting patiently for him to return home again after being gone too long: home perhaps not in body but certainly in spirit - both places where despite all its shortcomings you always wanted to return anyway because you knew deep down you were supposed to be there more than anywhere else!
