1. Airbnb Chronicles: A Property Manager's Journey

"Airbnb's been great for us," said Tom, "but the people who manage properties on it are a bit of a mixed bag."

"I know what you mean," agreed his wife, Sarah. "We've had some lovely stays, but also some not-so-lovely ones."

They were on a long drive to their holiday destination and were reminiscing about past trips.

"The first time we used Airbnb was in that little cottage in the Cotswolds," said Tom. "The owner was so helpful and gave us lots of tips on where to go and what to see."

"And remember that beautiful apartment we stayed in when we went to Rome?" said Sarah. "It was like something out of a magazine."

"Yes," agreed Tom. "And then there was that place in Cornwall…"

"Oh no, don't remind me!" groaned Sarah.

They both laughed at the memory of the tiny, damp cottage they'd stayed in during a particularly wet Easter break.

"But overall, I think it's been a really positive experience for us," said Tom. "I just hope other people feel the same way when they stay at our place."

Tom and Sarah had recently bought a small beach house on the south coast of England and had decided to list it on Airbnb as a way to make some extra income when they weren't using it themselves.

"It's such a lovely spot," said Sarah. "I'm sure people will love staying there."

Tom had spent quite a bit of time getting their listing ready and making sure everything was perfect for their first guests.

The couple arrived at their holiday destination later that day and spent an enjoyable week exploring the local area.

When it was time to head home, they decided to extend their trip by taking the scenic route along the coast road.

As they drove through one seaside town after another, they couldn't help but notice how many houses seemed to be listed on Airbnb.

"Wow, there must be a lot of money to be made from this," said Tom.

"I guess that's why there are so many people managing properties on Airbnb," agreed Sarah. "It's definitely become a big business."

They arrived home later that day and were delighted to find they'd received their first booking for the following weekend.

Tom spent the next few days getting everything ready for their guests.

"We need to make sure we leave them lots of information about the local area," he said. "And I'll put together a little welcome pack with some essentials like tea, coffee, and milk."

Sarah helped by cleaning the house from top to bottom and making sure all the beds were freshly made.

Finally, everything was ready for their first guests.

The couple arrived late on Friday afternoon and Tom showed them around before leaving them in peace to enjoy their stay.

"Well, that went well," said Sarah once they were back at home. "I hope all our guests are as nice as those people."

Over the next few months, Tom and Sarah had a steady stream of bookings and most of their guests were lovely.

Some even left little gifts or notes thanking them for their hospitality.

"This is great!" said Tom one day as he read yet another positive review from a happy guest. "I can't believe we didn't start doing this sooner."

But then one day they received an email from Airbnb saying they'd had a complaint from one of their guests.

"What could be wrong?" wondered Sarah. "We made sure everything was perfect for them."

She opened the email and read it out loud:

Dear Tom and Sarah,

I'm sorry to have to tell you this, but I think you have mice in your house! I saw one run across the kitchen floor last night and now I'm too scared to go into any of the other rooms in case there are more!

Also, I don't think you're being honest about the number of beds in your listing. You said there were three bedrooms, but I can only find two!

I'm sorry to have to leave this review, but I think it's important that you're aware of these issues.

Regards,

Linda

"Oh no!" groaned Tom. "This is not good."

To their relief, the next email they received was from another guest who had stayed more recently.

Dear Tom and Sarah,

I just wanted to say thank you for a wonderful stay at your beach house. We had such a great time and really appreciated all the little touches you provided.

The welcome pack was a lovely surprise and we enjoyed exploring the local area using all the information you left for us.

We'll definitely be recommending your place to our friends and hope to come back again soon.

Thanks again,

John

"Well, that's a relief," said Sarah with a smile. "It looks like most people are still happy with what we're offering."

"Let's just hope we don't get any more complaints," said Tom. "Otherwise, it might be time for us to find someone else to manage our property on Airbnb!"
