Gautham sat on the edge of his bed looking out over the city. He hadn't slept in days and it showed as his eyes were red and puffy. He was anxious, but he tried not to show it. His parents had been away for almost a week and they would be home soon. They had gone to see his grandmother by the beach in Chennai. They were driving back now, an 18-hour trip. Soon they would be home.

Gautham idly stared at his phone, watching the minutes tick down. 4:56pm...4:55pm...4:54pm...4:53pm. He walked over to his mirror and checked himself one last time. He looked pale and sickly, but it couldn't be helped. He had barely eaten since it happened and all he could think about was her face as she sat on the steps of her house, crying as her father kicked him out of her life forever. She hadn't even given him a chance to explain.

He went downstairs and made himself some instant coffee. As the water boiled, he took a deep breath, steeling himself for what was going to happen next. The phone started ringing and he answered it immediately, before it even had a chance to ring twice.

"Hello?" he said nervously into the speakerphone sitting on the kitchen countertop.

The voice on the other end sounded tired but cheerful. "Hey Gautham!" It was Vanathi, Gautham's best friend from high school who had moved with her father after their lease expired at the end of last month, leaving Gautham behind in Chennai all alone amidst everyone else's happy families as they celebrated Diwali together in November. "We're just outside your house! We'll be there any minute!"

"You're here already?! Oh no," Gautham said with alarm as he ran around the kitchen putting away all of his dishes that he had left out while making his coffee and cleaning up the counter island where he had been sitting when they called him on their way over.

"Relax," Vanathi giggled into the phone as she watched Gautham frantically move about like a headless chicken trying to make everything look presentable for when his parents got back from Chennai today after more than a week away from home with only each other for company.. "It's not like we haven't seen your place in ages." Vanathi was a little worried about Gautham though; she could hear in his voice that something was wrong and she knew that this wasn't just another one of his mild stress episodes that he always got when he didn't have anything real to worry about, at least nothing not worth getting worked up about anyway... Like how Iswarya doesn't love him anymore or how even though Shikhar is his best friend nobody ever invites them to hang out together or how Maithili said that Kathir still liked Iswarya when they all went out drinking one night three weeks ago or how Anjali's parents don't want him to date their daughter because they're related or how Anjali broke up with him three days ago because she wasn't ready for this kind of commitment right now or how today was his birthday but no one remembered except for Shikhar who sent him a text message saying "happy bday dude" when they woke up this morning... None of those things were real problems anyway, so what was Vanathi worried about? This was just another normal day for Gautham, another regular day being single in 2018 where no one dates anymore so what does it matter? Things will get better eventually; sometimes you just have to wait them out like you might wait for someone you really like who isn't interested in you right now but you know will like you eventually if you keep talking to them until they finally give in and fall head over heels in love with you too like everyone else has been doing since before Jesus was born! Besides, who knows? Maybe Anjali will change her mind after last night!

Gautham tried to push aside the whirlwind of thoughts racing through his mind as he quickly finished tidying up. He glanced at himself in the hallway mirror, running his fingers through his unkempt hair. Today was his birthday, and Vanathi had insisted on coming over to celebrate. Normally, he would have been thrilled about the idea, but today everything felt different.

As Gautham hurriedly straightened his clothes, he couldn't help but feel a pang of disappointment. He had hoped that Anjali would reach out to him, wishing him a happy birthday or at least acknowledging the special day. But just as he expected, the day had started off like any other, without any messages or calls from her. The memory of their breakup echoed in his mind, filling him with a mixture of sadness and confusion.

Pushing his thoughts to the side, Gautham forced himself to focus on the present. Vanathi was there for him, and he couldn't let his emotions dampen the celebration. As he walked back into the kitchen, he took a deep breath and plastered on a smile.

There was a knock on the door, and Gautham hurried to open it. Vanathi stood there with a bright smile and a gift bag in her hands. "Happy birthday, Gautham!" she exclaimed, enveloping him in a warm hug. Gautham hugged her back, feeling a small sense of comfort wash over him.

"Thank you, Vanathi," Gautham said, mustering up as much enthusiasm as possible. "Come on in."

Vanathi stepped inside, her eyes darting around the apartment. "It feels weird being here after moving out," she admitted, a hint of nostalgia in her voice.

Gautham closed the door behind them, feeling a wave of relief sweep over him. Vanathi's presence brought a sense of normalcy amidst the chaos of his emotions. He couldn't have asked for a better friend.

As they settled in the living room, Gautham glanced at the gift bag in Vanathi's hands. "What did you bring?"

Vanathi's eyes sparkled mischievously as she handed over the bag. "You'll see."

Curiosity piqued, Gautham tore open the bag and pulled out a brand new journal. Its cover was adorned with vibrant colors and intricate designs. Gautham's eyes widened in surprise.

"It's for you to pour your heart out," Vanathi explained. "Writing has always been your escape, Gautham. Maybe this will help."

Gautham couldn't help but feel touched by Vanathi's thoughtful gift. He had always found solace in writing, and having a new journal felt like a fresh start. He flipped through the pages, admiring the pristine blankness that invited him to fill it with his thoughts.

"I hope it helps too," Gautham said, a soft smile tugging at the corners of his lips. "Thank you, Vanathi."

Vanathi grinned back, her eyes full of sincerity. "You're welcome, Gautham. Remember, you're not alone in this. I'm here for you, no matter what."

Gautham felt warmth radiate from his chest as he looked at Vanathi. In that moment, he realized that friendship was sometimes stronger than romantic love. It was an anchor, a lifeline in the midst of uncertainties.

As they spent the evening sharing stories, laughter, and dreams, Gautham felt a glimmer of hope ignite within him. Maybe, just maybe, this birthday would mark the beginning of a new chapter in his life, one filled with healing, self-discovery, and the unwavering support of a true friend. And as he opened his new journal and poised his pen over the blank page, he knew that regardless of the challenges that lay ahead, he wouldn't face them alone.
