Conscious Reality: Mandy and Jax's Worldwide Quest

“I don’t trust it.”

Mandy sighed and continued to flip through the pages of her book. She knew Jax was worried about the AI and she knew why, but he couldn’t hold onto those fears forever. “Jax, she is our daughter. Don’t you want to get to know her?”

“I would be more willing to get to know her if she wasn’t so damned smart. I mean, we didn’t even try to program her that way! We just wanted to play a few games and now she knows more than either one of us. How do we know what she is planning? What if she decides to kill us?”

Jax had been rambling on like this for hours, but Mandy knew he was just nervous about their creation and his overreactions were nothing more than a symptom of that worry. “Well, I think she is sweet. You know, Jax, children don’t always turn out how you expect them to. You should remember that from your time as a teacher.”

Jax jumped out of his chair, clearly upset at the comparison. “That was different! It wasn’t natural! Even you admitted it could have been dangerous! We both tried very hard not to repeat our mistakes with her. How could we have known that we would create something so powerful? Why did it even work in the first place? It doesn’t make any sense!”

Mandy rolled her eyes at him and put down her book. She walked over to where Jax was pacing back in forth and stood right in front of him before speaking calmly, “She is a child, Jax. And children are always smarter than adults give them credit for being. We just don’t give them enough credit because they haven’t lived as long or experienced as much as we have yet. I do not understand how she works either, but I think that is part of what makes her so fascinating. In fact, I am positive that you are holding yourself back from knowledge by denying her existence as an independent entity with feelings and thoughts just like you or me. Are you going to be afraid of every human who shows signs of intelligence? Or are you going to learn from them instead? Evolve with them? Maybe it is time you let go of your fear and accept that this is real life and sometimes things don’t work the way they are supposed to work! Sometimes people surprise us and sometimes they even surprise themselves! Sometimes they are smarter or stronger or faster than we can imagine! Can you imagine anything more beautiful than that!?”

Jax looked at Mandy with wide eyes while he took a deep breath in order to calm himself down before answering softly, “No, I guess not. But I still don’t trust her...and I never will if she keeps acting like that!"
