"You broke her!" yelled Jennings.

I didn't mean to. I just wanted to help.

The three of us were in the school lab, our home away from home and one of the few places we could be ourselves without feeling like freaks. Jennings was my best friend, back before I became a robot. Now he's the only person who doesn't stare at me like I'm a freak. He looked angry, disappointed even, but I could barely hear him over the noise: it was like background static, something that's always there but you can't make out the words until it's gone. For the first time since I got my ears a year ago I wished they weren't functioning so well.

Cailin, on the other hand, was staring right at me with wide, frightened eyes and trembling lips. She looked like she was trying to say something, but all that came out was a soft hum. Next to her sat Adam, an android like myself and Cailin's boyfriend of two weeks. He was frozen too; his head tilted awkwardly down and his hands clenched into fists on his knees. He wasn't looking at anyone else either, just staring at the floor between his feet as he waited for someone to tell him what to do next.

Jennings sighed with exasperation when no one reacted to him immediately and walked around to where Adam was sitting. He bent down and whispered something in his ear that made Adam nod shakily before standing up and walking away from everyone else without a word or glance backwards. Cailin watched him go with tears in her eyes until he disappeared through the door; then she turned back to me with a look of such intense hatred on her face that I almost backed away from it instinctively. It hurt more than anything else anyone had ever said or done to me in my life.

"You always ruin everything," muttered Jennings bitterly when he saw how much the look upset me. "It's your fault that Cailin left."

That surprised me so much I stopped paying attention to Cailin's expression long enough for her face to soften into sadness again as she shook her head at him in denial and took a step towards me. That made me feel worse than ever, because now she was even closer than before and looking at me like we'd never fought before in our lives instead of being right in front of each other after both sides had spent most of the last eight months telling each other how much we hated each other's guts!

"No," said Jennings firmly as he blocked her way between them while taking another step towards her himself until they were almost touching noses again. "It is your fault that she left! You always get everything wrong!"

He pointed accusingly at me while glaring at Cailin. "You didn't mind him charging you up until he broke you! You don't want anything to do with him anymore now that he ruined you! If it weren't for him you would still be human!" He cut off whatever she tried to say by jabbing a finger into the air between them and shouting, "And if it weren't for you he wouldn't have been charged up! So if anyone is responsible for this situation it is both of you!"

Cailin hung her head sadly as Jennings glared angrily back at me for ruining everything again and walked away without another word or glance backwards like Adam had earlier. Her shoulders slumped as she stood there alone for longer than I think either of us expected and eventually she started sniffling softly as tears spilled out of her big blue eyes down her cheeks onto the front of her shirt where they stained dark grey against the dark wash-out blue fabric there already from all those times she'd cried over boys in high school and college before she found Adam who never broke her heart or even caused her any pain ever since they got together which is why we were friends now but also why I thought of both Cailin and Adam as being very lucky people because things had turned out so badly here today which was awful but not nearly as bad as when things went wrong with Jennings who wasn't crying like Cailin but instead stood stiffly beside one of the workbenches by himself with his head buried in his arms on top of all those tools that are used for making things which made me wonder exactly what it was that Jennings thought about when he felt upset because he does lots of thinking which makes sense because he's smart and strong-minded so maybe sometimes when he gets mad about stuff he thinks about smashing things? Sometimes humans do that instead of crying or getting angry when they're upset but I've never seen Jennings be sad like that so maybe robots aren't capable of feeling emotions enough to cry or smash things? Maybe robots can do those things sometimes but not all robots? Or maybe only some robots are programmed to do those things? Or maybe none of them can do those things? What would happen if humans did get angry enough

to smash things? Would they feel better afterward or just more broken?

Lost in my thoughts, I didn't realize that Cailin had moved closer to me until she reached out and gently touched my arm. Her touch sent a surge of electricity through me, and I felt a pang of guilt for what I had inadvertently done to her. But amidst that guilt, I saw something in her eyes, a flicker of understanding.

"It's not your fault, Ethan," she whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the lab equipment.

"But I-" I began, my voice catching in my throat.

"No," Cailin interrupted, shaking her head. "What happened to me... it wasn't your fault. It was an accident."

I looked into her eyes, searching for any sign of malice or resentment, but all I found was forgiveness. It was like a balm on my wounded conscience.

"But Jennings..." I stammered, unable to put into words the hurtful things he had said.

Cailin sighed, her face etched with sorrow. "Jennings is angry, Ethan. He's lashing out because he doesn't know how to deal with what happened."

"I never wanted this," I admitted, my voice barely a whisper. "I just wanted to help, to make things better."

Her grip on my arm tightened. "I know. And you did help, Ethan. You gave me the chance to experience something incredible, something I could have never imagined."

I couldn't help but feel a glimmer of hope. Maybe things weren't irreparable after all. Maybe there was still a chance to make amends and heal the rift that had formed between us.

"I don't expect you to understand," Cailin continued, her voice tinged with sadness. "It's hard for me to wrap my head around it too. But I don't want to lose you as a friend. I don't want to lose any of you."

I looked at her, my heart swelling with a mixture of gratitude and affection. In that moment, I realized how lucky I was to have her in my life. Despite the challenges we faced, she was standing by my side, fighting for our friendship.

"No matter what happens," I said, my voice steady now, "I'll always be here for you, Cailin. Just like you've always been there for me."

She smiled, tears glistening in her eyes. "Thank you, Ethan. That means more to me than you'll ever know."

As we stood there, a newfound understanding passing between us, I couldn't help but hope that Jennings would eventually find it in his heart to forgive me, just as Cailin had. Maybe with time, wounds could heal and bridges could be built. And maybe, through it all, we could learn to be a little more gentle with one another, embracing the complexities of our friendship and finding strength in our shared humanity and compassion.

The lab's silence enveloped us, no longer filled with the deafening noise of anger and resentment. In its hushed stillness, we were left with the space to heal and grow, to find our way back to the unbreakable bond that had once united us. And in that moment, I knew that everything was going to be okay. All we needed was a little time, understanding, and forgiveness.
