Published 4/17/2023A fiesty heiress and her Wiccan friend embark on an adventurous road trip through ancient France, fighting for an unheard-of female civilization and discovering a passionate devotion to each other as they inspire a revolution.

"Sophia, you've got to stop doing that."
"What's that?"
"Talking to yourself."
Sophia stopped walking and turned around, facing Perceli. "You think I talk to myself?"
"Like all the time. I can't hear myself think."
"I don't know what you're talking about," she said with a smile. "I don't do that." She walked off, leaving Perceli standing there. A moment later, she turned back around. "Wow! It's so beautiful here!" she exclaimed as she took in her surroundings. "Just look at that sunset!"
Perceli looked up and saw nothing but clouds blocking the sun. "There's no sun out."
"There sure is!" She pointed towards the horizon. "It's right there!" She ran forward and started jumping up and down as if she was trying to catch one of the clouds. Perceli sighed and followed her, trying not to step in any of the large piles of horse dung scattered along the road. Sophia had a tendency to see things that weren't really there when she was excited about something. Now that they were out of Paris, she seemed more excited than usual; it was probably because they were finally away from everyone else in France and on their way to explore their homeland. They had been walking for two days since leaving Paris; Perceli didn't want to use her car because someone might try to steal it, and it would take too long for them to make it to their first destination on foot anyway. There hadn't been any immediate dangers yet, but Sophia seemed overly paranoid about everything they passed by; every time they encountered someone on the road or in a town, she would get nervous until they left again.
She'd always been like this - ever since they'd met five years ago at school, Sophia had always been nervous around others. She said it was because she was shy, but that hadn't stopped her from running away whenever someone got too close to them at school or in town. If possible, she seemed worse now than before; lately, whenever they crossed paths with another person, she seemed terrified that they were going to be attacked or killed by them. As far as Perceli knew though, no one really wanted anything bad to happen to them except Sophia herself who thought everyone was out to get her for some reason; the only times anyone had ever tried anything against them had been when Sophia went after them first herself.
While Sophia tended towards being impulsive herself most of the time, Perceli hoped it wouldn't lead them into danger again like last time when Sophia attacked two girls who were obviously just walking home from school and scaring off everyone nearby afterwards with her running and screaming thing while they were still there. People got used to it after awhile though, so she didn't worry too much about people finding it odd now when Sophia did it anymore - if anything, people found it amusing after a while considering how often it happened these days now that they'd been traveling across France for so long already looking for new places to explore together.
Even though they spent most of their time alone together now exploring places nobody else knew about yet sometimes together as well whenever they felt like it, Perceli never got tired of being with Sophia; even if she wasn't always making sense anymore mostly because of all the things going through her head all at once sometimes these days instead of her usual calm self-confidence which made her seem almost otherworldly sometimes.
Sophia's thoughts and feelings could be quite complex and hard to understand. People had their own ways of coping with emotions such as sadness, anger, fear, or happiness. Some individuals might feel contented or empowered by their emotions, while others would try to learn from their experiences and grow stronger. Though hardly anyone liked admitting their liking for negative emotions, Sophia herself always liked admitting how afraid she felt for that was her most dominant emotion. Fear had always been her biggest enemy, and yet somehow fear had also become her best friend at the same time.
This unusual relationship between Sophia and fear puzzled many people, including Perceli, especially since Sophia never really explained this contradiction despite repeated requests from Perceli. However, as long as Sophia remained friends with fear and they continued their journey together, nobody bothered asking questions anymore, assuming that friendship between friends might remain unexplained forever.
Their friendship had saved them from many precarious situations in the past, and hopefully, it would continue to do so in the future before life unexpectedly ended for them. But for now, they pressed on: exploring new places, overcoming challenges, and facing whatever else fate had in store for them together, hand in hand.
