The Imposter

"Joshua, come here. I have something to tell you."

Joshua looked up from his video game and saw Janine Cody, his grandmother—or at least, the woman he had always believed to be his grandmother—standing in the doorway of his bedroom. She had a serious expression on her face, and Joshua felt a sense of unease wash over him.

"What's up, Grandma?" he asked, setting down the controller.

Janine walked into the room and sat down on the edge of Joshua's bed. She took a deep breath and looked at him with sad eyes.

"There's something I need to tell you," she said quietly. "Something that I should have told you a long time ago."

Joshua felt a knot form in his stomach. He knew that whatever Janine was about to say, it couldn't be good.

"I'm not really your grandmother," Janine continued. "I mean, I am in a way—I raised you like my own—but biologically, I'm not related to you."

Joshua stared at Janine in shock. His mind was racing as he tried to process what she was saying.

"What do you mean?" he asked finally. "If you're not my grandmother, then who are my parents?"

Janine sighed and reached out to take Joshua's hand.

"Your parents were part of a Melbourne crime family," she explained. "They got mixed up with some dangerous people and ended up dead because of it."

Joshua felt like the ground had been pulled out from under him. He didn't know what to say or how to react.

"But why didn't you tell me this before?" he asked quietly.

"I wanted to protect you," Janine replied. "I thought that if I kept the truth from you, then maybe you could have a normal life—a life without all the violence and danger that comes with being part of this family."

Joshua looked down at his hands, his mind still reeling from the news. He couldn't believe that everything he thought he knew about himself and his family was a lie.

"So, who is my real grandmother?" he asked, finally looking up at Janine.

Janine hesitated for a moment before answering.

"Your real grandmother is a retired detective," she said. "She spent years trying to bring down our family—my family. She was hot on our trail when your parents disappeared, and I think she knows more about what happened to them than she's letting on."

Joshua felt a mix of emotions swirling inside him—anger, confusion, grief. He didn't know how to process it all.

"What do we do now?" he asked.

"We find your grandmother," Janine replied. "We get the answers you deserve."

And with that, Joshua's world shifted once again. He was no longer just a teenager living in the suburbs of Melbourne—he was part of something bigger, something dangerous.
